COURSE OVERVIEW

Stockport County Community Foundation holds its Walking Football sessions each week on Friday mornings 11am-12.00noon at the Power League, Heaton Mersey, Stockport SK4 2AP. This is a very popular drop-in activity with up to 30 players attending.

The sessions are for senior adults (male and female players) over 50 years of age who want to take part in some physical activity, to socialise making new friends and to have some fun doing so. It provides opportunities for those living with long-term health and serious mental illness, dementia, or people who are experiencing loneliness and living in social isolation.

Our Walking Football Project offers a friendly environment and is as much a social event as a physical activity opportunity. The ladies and gentlemen who attend enjoy a chat over a tea/coffee/Juice and a biscuit at half time and at the end of the match. The activity starts at 11.00am every Friday and begins with a gentle warm-up and stretch on the 3G Astro Turf pitch and progresses to friendly six-aside football matches with a half time break for refreshments and getting to know one another. Players are also given the chance to be part of a team and we enter tournaments, have match day trips and ground tours and social days/evenings out. Every December the players very much enjoy getting together after the game for a Christmas buffet and this event proves a real Winner!

The details of the session are as follows:

  • Walking Football Session for the over 50’s every Friday 11am -12.00noon at The Power League, Heaton Mersey, Stockport SK4 2AP. The pitch is 3g Astro Turf, so training shoes are the best type of footwear. The first session is a taster for those who would like to try it and then its £2.00 per player per session each week.

Adrian Rigby-Bates, the Foundation’s Walking Football Co-ordinator said:

“Our weekly walking football session is really successful and attracts senior men and women over the age of 50, with our eldest gentleman being 83 years of age.  It’s a fabulous project enabling senior citizens to reconnect with their love of football by playing in a safe and fun environment. The weekly session has so many positive benefits in improving health and wellbeing, building confidence and self-esteem, getting people out to socialise and make new friends as well as enjoying themselves and having some fun! Please do come along and try it out!”
